YourHoustonLife: June 2012

“So what’s going on this weekend?”

Hands down, that is the single most common question we get here at the MyHoustonLife offices. And we get it; sure, reading about us going out and eating some of Houston’s best foods, taking in some of the city’s most interesting sights, or enjoying a night out on the town may make for a good way to kill time at the office, but it doesn’t really do much for your social calendar.

Well, we’ve heard you. And we’re here to help.

We introduce you to YourHoustonLife, a monthly look at some of the most noteworthy events coming to our city over the next 30 or so days. These are places and happenings hand-picked by MHL Staff and Contributors Like You, so you know it’ll all promise to be entertaining, enlightening, or at least something out of your routine. So whether you’re craving something new or need a reminder for your planner, be sure to bookmark the YourHoustonLife page to always keep a pulse on your city.

Did we miss something? Sorry, we’re only human! But please let us (and everyone else) in the comments know what’s up. And if you want to let us know about something in advance, send us a tip at info@myhoustonlife.com.

June 2nd – 3rd: Free Press Summer Fest

Eleanor Tinsley Park

You’re never supposed to start the show with the showstopper, but we’ll make an exception in this case.

This is the big one. The 4th Annual Free Press Summer Fest kicks off the very first weekend of next month, and with it comes a barrage of talent that any city would be proud to have representing them. You’ve got powerhouse national acts like Snoop Dogg, The Flaming Lips, and Texas favorite Willie Nelson. You’ve got big name indie bands in the form of The Avett Brothers, Young The Giant, and Best Coast. And perhaps the most interesting part of FPSF, at least for the kind of people who run a website about Houston, is the huge focus on groundbreaking, spotlight-taking bands that come from right here in HTX. Critically acclaimed rapper Z-Ro, MHL favorites The Tontons, and local breakout acts like the Wild Moccasins, The Last Place You Look, Fat Tony, A Sea Es, and many, many more. We haven’t even mentioned some of the talent coming from our neighbors in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, or everywhere across the Lone Star State. Suffice it to say, you have to come to FPSF.

And if you hurry up, you still can! 2 Day Passes are still on sale, but with a lineup like this, they surely won’t last long. We’ll definitely be there, so if you happen to spot a MyHoustonLifer, stop us and say hi!

June 9th: Houston Beer Fest

Hermann Square Park

You know what’s great? Beer. Beer is pretty great. Especially when there’s a whole lot of it, in all kinds of types and flavors and brews. And if any of those things sound really, really good right about now, take that enthusiasm and plan to use today to partake in the festivities at the Houston Beer Fest. With live music, activities, food, and of course, like, all of the beer, the Beer Fest is definitely going to be buzzing all over your friends’ Facebook and Twitter feeds. If you can’ beat ’em, join ’em, right?

Word to you parents out there, though; this event is strictly 21 and up, so be sure to find a sitter for the kiddos. Tickets are available now.

June 23rd: Pride Houston Festival and Parade

Westheimer Rd. between Dunlavy and Crocker

When President Obama, leader of the free world, announced that he believed in same sex marriages being legalized, it sent a wave of happiness over same sex couples across the country. 2012 has already been a tremendous year for the Gay and Lesbian Community, so you can only imagine the celebration to be held during this year’s Pride Houston Festival and Parade. This isn’t some niche celebration, either – hundreds of thousands of Houstonians take part in the festivities, while businesses large and small, national and locally owned, all vie for the chance to sponsor of the year’s biggest parties. And even more awesome? All the fun can be had for the low, low price of free, as attending the festival is completely cover-free. Make sure to bring some spending money, though – vendors will be all over the place.

June 23rd: Fight Club

River Oaks Theater

I’m going to break the first and second rules here.

No, I’m not supposed to talk about it. But, between you and me, you’ve been missing out if you’ve never seen 1999’s now classic film Fight Club, starring Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter. The anti-consumerism, anti-commercialism ode to the frustrated male based on the book of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk (a favorite of this blogger) stands up incredibly well almost 15 years after its initial release. Hell, it stands up to most films released only a few short months ago. Fans of the film who never got a chance to catch it in theaters can finally see it in all its glory, while new fans can have their mind blown for the very first time. In fact, going isn’t optional. You don’t have a choice. You have to go.

The first rule is, you don’t ask questions.
