Stick It In Your Mouth! The Stick It Truck

Sometimes the food truck gods bring me food.

I will admit that I have spent my fair share of time chasing after Houston’s ever growing population of food trucks. I am even beginning to realize that the sheer number of food trucks rolling around town nowadays is increasing faster than I can track them down. Luckily, every so often, one of them finds me!

Such a phenomenon is how I found myself before the well-reviewed and much-talked-about Stick It Food Truck outside of Boheme Cafe and Wine Bar on a recent weekend afternoon. Food truck gluttony would follow.

A quick review of the Stick It menu and it becomes apparent how the truck received its namesake (because it may have not been completely obvious from the get-go?). Everything they serve is on a stick! Grilled flank steak on a stick. Grilled pork belly on a stick. Fried fish on a stick. Basically, you name it and they… er… Stick It.

After some quick inner deliberation, I was ready to place my order. Marinated Skirt Steak with Southwest Cous Cous Salad, Chimichurri Sauce and Avocado, Korean BBQ Pork Belly Lettuce Wraps with Basmati Rice and Sesame Gastrique, and for dessert, Funnel Cake Battered Brie Cheese with Strawberry Compote.

Don’t judge me… I shared.

Of the two grilled meats, I enjoyed the pork belly more than the skirt steak but both were grilled to perfection — tender with plenty of tasty, caramelized char bits. The pork belly just had that winning balance of fatty and meaty goodness. Paired with the Basmati rice, this dish rivals many Grilled Pork Chop Rice Plates found in your area Vietnamese restaurants.

As for the grilled skirt steak dish, the southwest cous cous salad was a refreshing surprise that had me reaching back for more spoonfuls without realizing it. The item that really left me and my fellow diners talking, however, was the funnel cake battered brie cheese. To quote fellow MHL foodie, dperez, “They’re like grilled cheese monte cristo sandwiches on a stick!”

“They’re like grilled cheese monte cristo sandwiches on a stick!”

The salty buttery-ness of the melted Brie cheese combined with the sweet undertones of the strawberry compote and the crispness of its golden funnel cake shell made for one ridiculously tasty bite. Definitely one of the most delicious bites of food, dessert, or really whatever, in town. *drool*

Simply said. You’re gonna want to try out the food being slung out this truck. Really… just stick it in your mouth.
