HOUSTUNES Music Spotlight: Monica Matocha

Receiving Houston Press Music Awards for Best Female Vocals and Best Pop Artist, Monica thanks her fans.

The girl’s got style, and even defies gravity. Monica Matocha, local to Houston, is a young heart that’s destined to rise above all that holds back the elusive attainment of pop stardom.

Passion like this can’t be taught, which is why Monica was immediately drawn to the line from Steven Furtick’s book, Sun Stand Still,  “If no one has laughed at the size of your dream lately… you are not dreaming big enough.” That essential drive, paired with Monica’s refreshing humility and natural grounding resonates with every new fan she meets.

Witness Monica’s video performance in the studios of Houston’s 104 KRBE.  The elegant vocals on Ghost Town tell the story of a talent who’s sharing her love affair with music for all those who believe that a strong spirit will take you anywhere you need to go.  While Monica’s captivating energy and swanky outfits may first grab your attention, the subtle brilliance of her songs pulls you in the rest of the way.

And while Monica’s first love is music, she’ll admit to occasionally having “arm parties” with her bracelets.  Her lust for fashion means always looking like a rock star, and Monica even creates some of this look herself. She has an eye for trendy jewelry and clothes, so when you hear yourself ask, “Wow, where did she get that?” The answer is: she made it.  Monica likes pulling in vintage pieces to mix with the modern in both her style and her music.

Incorporating her faith into all aspects of her life, Monica even puts her heart into her jewelry. When have you ever seen a rosary look so chic before? Her website is sprinkled with her favorite quotes from the big book itself, and she follows the golden rule as if it were a law.

Monica is a fan of her fans.

She always takes the time to sincerely thank them all, along with family, friends, her band, producer and everyone who has helped turn her pop dreams into reality. Monica credits her fans for two Houston Press Music Awards: Best Female Vocals and Best Pop Artist. Her single Impostor is making its way up the charts with 15 stations on the record pushing it within 30 spots away from the “Top 40.”

Monica and her producer, John Glover, believed so strongly in her music that they got the sound they were looking for without even leaving the house. They transformed Monica’s place into a recording studio with the vocals being done right in her sister’s closet. Who knew closets could have such great acoustics?

Imposter debuted on iTunes on Nov. 1, 2011, which also happens to be Monica’s birthday. A momentous occasion and milestones reached in a new year to mark a staggering journey that is far from over.
