MHL finds a Little Burger, Big Taste

Ever find a dish at a restaurant that was so good, you wished there was a restaurant that only served that specific dish? Well that’s how the Montrose area eatery, Little Bigs, and their delicious sliders went from an odd menu item at Reef, one of Houston’s premier seafood restaurants, to it’s very own bonified Houston burger joint.

Whispers of how tasty the sliders at Little Bigs are and the intrigue of how these sliders were in fact, so popular at Reef, the chef and owner felt compelled to open a restaurant specifically to sell them, were more than enough reasons for MyHoustonLife to go out and try them for ourselves. We were NOT disappointed. Read more about our visit to Little Bigs after the break.

Little Bigs is located off the intersection of Montrose and Westheimer, two streets synonymous with Houston nightlife and generally known as the center for late night dining in Houston. The Little Bigs building itself is a small shack, simple in decorum with limited seating. The exterior, however, is wrapped by a large, covered deck furnished with picnic-style tables, flat-screen TVs and in one corner, a view of the Downtown skyline. The atmosphere here is distinctively casual and yet, noticeably sprinkled with the glam and glitter of Houston hipsters and night owls alike.

Ordering is straightforward (there’s not much to the menu: sliders, shakes and fries). You can choose from four possible sliders: beef with or without cheese (duh, with cheese), chicken, pulled-pork, or vegetarian. Then, get an order of fresh cut, twice-fried fries and a shake to round out your meal. In addition to sliders, shakes, and fries, Little Bigs does have a rather impressive selection of wines, beers, and frozen adult beverages available for order.

I decided to run the gamut of the Little Bigs menu by ordering a trio of sliders, one of each flavor (yes, I completely ignored the black bean slider and I regret nothing), a vanilla shake and an order of their 4-minute fries. Fellow MHLer, jrojas, being the red-meat carnivore that he is, went all beef with his sliders and indulged on a butterscotch shake. By the way, the butterscotch shake garnered rave reviews and had Rojas professing his new found love over the world wide web in the form of this tweet: “Sorry, loved ones. You’ve been replaced by the butterscotch shake at Little Big’s. We’re in love, and nothing’s coming between us.”

Upon receiving our food, I employed my strategy of eating the slider I deemed “safest” (the beef cheesebuger) first and making my way towards the “most unique” (the pulled pork). I am happy to report that these little burgers are as tasty as advertised! The beef slider is moist and blanketed with melted cheddar cheese and sweet grilled onions. The buns are amazing and are everything you want in a classic burger bun –toasty on the outside and soft on the inside. The chicken slider was good but at the same time uninspiring (the slice of sweet butter pickle seemed a but out of place to me). And finally, the pulled pork slider, the unknowing star of my platter. The pork was juicy and had an addictive spice that left a pleasant kick in your mouth with each bite. Needless to say, next time I will be ordering a trio of pulled pork sliders.

As for the rest of my meal, the fries were good despite being badly under-seasoned (a quick shake of the salt and pepper shakers served as a quick and effective solution) and my shake was satisfactory indeed.

Little Bigs is a great alternative to the standard burger joints and chains found around town. Open late 7 days a week (11am-10pm Sun through Wed, 11am-11pm on Thurs, and 11am-3am Friday through Sat), this eatery is a great place to grab a quick lunch, a hearty dinner or the perfect night cap to your night out!
